How cooking with CLA safflower oil can help you lose weight?

Last Updated October 11th, 2019

What is CLA safflower oil?

Conjugated linoleic acid also referred to as CLA is a type of polyunsaturated fatty acid that has acquired a place in the weight reduction sector. It is present widely in a number of foods such as dairy products and meat. Safflower oil is a commonly used cooking oil which contains trace amounts of CLA. When safflower oil is supplemented with healthy doses of CLA it can aid in weight loss and have numerous other health benefits.

What is safflower oil?

Safflower is a plant whose seeds and flowers are used to produce medicinal oil. The seeds from the safflower plant are taken for several medical conditions like diabetes, heart disease, hair loss, fever, tumors, breathing ailments, clotting conditions, pain, coronary heart disease, and traumatic injuries. The safflower plant is widely used as cooking oil all over the world.

Safflower oil is being marketed in various parts of the world with different combinations. For instance, in India, it is marketed as saffola oil which is a mix of safflower and rice bran oil and in unusual cases; it is also blended with soy oil for marketing purposes.

In recent times, it has found a rapid increase in its growth and rose to fame as cooking oil for all cooking categories. Safflower oil is a constituent of the following elements, monounsaturated fatty acid (oleic acid omega-9) 13-75%, polyunsaturated fatty acid (linoleic acid omega-6) 14-79%, and saturated fatty acid (palmitic acid) 4-10%.

How are CLA and safflower oil related?

Both CLA and safflower retain their own credibility of several copious qualities. Whereas CLA safflower oil is a blended mixture which contains safflower as the principal ingredient and varied extracts from numerous plants. The combination of safflower, CLA and other plant extracts provides a detoxifying effect combine with the reduction of several fatal health complications.  This magic supplement helps to reduce body weight and also contributes to muscle growth. The combined production of CLA and safflower oil came to the spotlight in the year 1979 and was labeled as CLA safflower oil.

It came to the limelight with several speculations but was however deemed safe for consumption by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2008. To clarify their explanation, they elaborated further that CLA is an inherent component that is produced in the body when bacteria acts on meat products and dairy products in the intestine or stomach.  The bacterium in your body performs the duty of extracting and synthesizing the Linoleic Acid that helps in removing excess fat from your body.

How can it help in losing weight?

The presence of CLA in safflower oil helps act as a detoxifying agent that eliminates all the unwanted fat from your body. Dr. Mark Cook from the University of Wisconsin took issue with the results by pointing out that in his own similar experiments, “A vegetable oil like safflower is used as the negative control! Replacing only 5-10% of vegetable oil consumption with CLA improves fat accumulation and inflammation substantially.”

These empirical studies have proven that the combination of CLA and safflower do help with weight reduction. The CLA safflower oil targets the abdominal fat and specified areas of the body. It also aids in boosting metabolism, breaking down of existing fat tissues and stops new ones from occurring, adding to which it retains the muscle mass and influences muscle growth. It is not an over-the-counter medication that has to be obtained with the help of prescriptions but it a so-called medication that helps to keep your weight in check. Apart from weight loss and muscle mass it also helps strengthen immunity.

The CLA safflower oil entirely changes your fat metabolism and restricts your appetite. This restriction helps to control your hunger pangs and in the long run, helps you lose weight. The people who possess lean muscles and reduced muscle power gain strength and muscle mass with the dietary consumption of CLA safflower oil. This is made possible when CLA pushes the fat into the bloodstream, this influences your energy levels with the involvement of the liver, muscles, and body cells. These in return help you gain muscle mass and strength.

CLA-safflower oil a pack with several other health benefits too

Safflower oils naturally possess the tendency to initiate weight loss as they are made up of mono-saturated fatty acid and polyunsaturated fatty acid, which produces the antioxidative effect. As a result, it reduces bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol. With the addition of CLA to safflower oil, the cycle is all a new. The intake of CLA safflower oil attacks the fat burning messenger directly and forces them to burn down the stubborn fat in your body. Along with burning stubborn fat it also burns the fat tissues and stops it from regenerating. In due course of time, these tissues start assimilating into blood cells.

The calories provided from the safflower oil helps in keeping you full. It cuts the bad fat and influences the good fat to play its vital role as a shield and blood sugar controller. The fats present in safflower oil are essential for hormone regulation and memory. It also consists of anti-inflammatory properties, according to a study mentioned in Clinical Nutrition, the unsaturated fatty acids, and safflower oil combine together to improve markers of inflammation. This anti-inflammatory characteristic also helps with several health conditions including diabetes and heart diseases. Safflower oil also has an essence of vitamin E, which helps it benefit your skin and makes it smooth and healthy.

And above all, it doesn’t blast when you cook it. It is an absolutely safe and edible oil to cook with. Not all oils are safe to use for frying purposes, however, CLA safflower oil has a mild flavor and is deemed safe to cook at higher temperatures.

What else does CLA safflower oil contain?

Several CLA safflower oil products are never been a transparent product for consumers to prey on. However, its ingredients have been a mystery and an array of studies and researches brought its ingredients to the light, thanks to science. Below are the individual benefits of the ingredients present in the making of CLA safflower oil, they are,

  • Safflower the major plant ingredient- a friend to weight loss treatment.
  • Linoleic Acid is an element extracted from Safflower and synthesized to form CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid).
  • Flaxseeds are rich sources of fiber and a reliable source of fatty acid. It has a direct bang on effect and enhances the slimming effect of CLA. Use of flaxseeds helps control high cholesterol and digestive complications, while it also helps maintain the blood sugar level and decreases appetite.
  • Oat bran is effective in reducing cholesterol and maintaining the blood glucose level.
  • Papaya leaf extract commonly used for the treatment of gastroenteritis and parasite infections, CLA couldn’t have been any better without its addition in the list.
  • Black nut hull is an effective remedy for parasitic infections; it also finds its place in the list of ingredients.
  • Prune extract that consists of sorbitol acts as a natural laxative and helps prevent constipation. The high amount of fiber in it is a plus point and the aloe vera gives you radiant and glowing skin.
  • Apple Pectin is also a cholesterol controller and constipation preventer.
  • Acidophilus probiotic, this is present in almost all probiotic blends, these exist in the human body naturally.
  • A certain amount of plant extracts.
  • Organic additives

How true are its claims?

The very introduction of the CLA safflower oil into society came out with several speculations ruling its adverse effects. A study in 2007 by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition discovered that CLA supplements influenced an increase in fat oxidation and burned energy during sleep. Another study in 2007 by the International Journal of Obesity stated that it could help reduce body fat and shave off holiday weight gain.

Though it sounds promising, it has been a controversial product for several years. It is under speculation that CLA in safflower oil is a type of Trans fat which can be chemically made by altering linoleic acid which is prominent in vegetable oils. The effects of CLA in safflower oil get altered when they are made for commercial purposes which make it difficult to obtain the authentic benefits present in the original CLA.

Many individuals are under the consumption that safflower is a wonderful source of CLA. But on the contrary, it contains only .7 milligram of CLA per gram of safflower oil. Safflower oil is made up of linoleic oil which accounts for 70%. The presence of omega-6 fats in CLA safflower oil has been another section of concern as omega-6 fatty acids are major contributors to obesity. Such formulated claims are yet to be proven and its authenticity is yet to be determined.

Are there any side-effects?

It may not show a lot of side effects but when taken beyond the recommended daily allowance (RDA) it can cause harmful effects. CLA safflower oil showcases a thinning effect in blood. It may slow down the clotting of blood which can lead to bleeding.

It is therefore contradicted for people with bleeding disorders, and those who have undergone surgery. It shouldn’t be combined with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs, for instance medication like aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), diclofenac (Voltaren, Cataflam, others), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), naproxen (Anaprox, Naprosyn, others), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, warfarin (Coumadin), and others. People with an allergy to ragweed and similar plants should consult with their doctor or dietician before taking a safflower diet.

Is CLA safflower the right oil for you?

Irrespective of its encouraging benefits and a promise to give you those curves, it is still necessary for you to maintain a healthy lifestyle by following a plant-based diet loaded with vegetables, fruits, and other nutrients. As Nutritionist Taub-Dix says, “There is only one way to achieve health and vitality and that is through a healthy eating and exercise plan”. There aren’t any much damages reported after the consumption of CLA safflower oil and has been found prominently in many individuals diet plan.

In sum, whether it is any part of the world where CLA safflower oil is sold for commercial purposes, it is always better to choose traditional fat burners like ghee which with the implementation of CLA safflower oil has lost its market. No matter what is said, a healthy diet with an active life contributes to the betterment of your health.
