Therapeutic Indications for Voglibose

Voglibose is used in the long-term treatment of patients with impaired glucose tolerance.  With the trade name of Voglib, this drug effectively helps in the management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus by lowering blood glucose level in patients.   Voglibose is an orally active alpha glucosidase inhibitor that particularly assists in control of postprandialhyperglycaemia (PPHG).

Specifically, healthcare specialists resort to Voglibose in Diabetes management for lowering PPHG, whena combination of OHAs or insulin preparations along with diet and/or exercise has not producedsignificant improvement in control of blood sugar.

Voglibose is manufactured as tablets for oral intake with strengths of 0.2 mg and 0.3 mg. This medicine is used in isolation or in combination with other drugs to achieve the desired effect.

Do I need a prescription?

Voglibose can be purchased from a pharmacy or drug store only with a prescription from a qualified medical practitioner.

Dosage

Dialectologists individualize the dosage of Voglibose based on the manner of response to the drug as well as tolerance.

  • The dosage of Voglibose for adults is fixed at 0.2 mg administered orally three times daily.
  • Take Voglibose just before each meal. The same dosage applies for patientswith steroid induced diabetesand non-diabetic hyperinsulinaemia.
  • Take care not to exceed the maximum recommended dose of 0.6 mg.
  • Higher dose of Voglibose 0.3 mg is recommended three times daily before each meal only if the response to patients with 0.2mg dose has proved ineffective.
  • When Doctors prescribe Voglibose, they also advice strict changes to diet and lifestyle.
  • Dose titration is effected only if patients do not respond as expected to the initial dose of Voglibose.
  • For Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus IDDM,doctors prescribe a dose of 0.2 to 0.3 mg of Voglibose prior to meals in combination with insulin administration.
  • Dosage for victims of glycogen storage disease is fixed at 0.1mg Voglibose along with lunch and dinner. This has the capability of lowering the incidence of hypoglycaemic episodes and is as effective as compared to patients who are not on any medication.
  • Store the drug in a safe place away from children and pets.
  • Voglibose should ideally be stored in adry place  at temperatures below 30degrees Celsius.

 Chemical Composition

Mechanism of Action

Voglibose achieve anti-hypoglycaemic effect in the following manner:

The alpha glycosidase hydrolyses enzymes, oligosaccharides and disaccharides to glucose and other monosaccharides in the small intestine.

So effectively, Voglibosehelps in delaying the digestion and absorption of dietary polysaccharides by reversible control of carbohydrate digestive enzymes, for instance, zomaltase, maltose, and sucrose which impacts post prandial hyperglycaemia positively.

Voglibose also assists mobilisotary alpha endogenous glycogen-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), which has an inhibitory action on glycogen, thus lowering fasting glucose levels.

Voglibose also causes the improved release of insulinotrupic hormone, GLP-1, which results in better insulin sensitivity and secretion.
