Understanding Holistic Healing: Definition & Purpose

Holistic means ‘whole’ or taking care of your entire body. It emphasizes not just on any part of the body but your entire being that is your mind, body, soul, and emotions.

So, holistic healing can be defined as a pathway or an approach that seeks to take care of the entire person to maintain a balance between his physical and emotional functions. Every living organism to live a healthy life are bound by these three factors:

– Bodily functions.
– Emotional wellbeing.
– Mental state.

If any of these three factors are out of place, like physical pain or mental trauma can cause an imbalance in our lives. Holistic healing focuses on maintaining a proper balance and harmony in our body. For instance, if you have physical pain or disease, holistic healing will try to understand the source of your problem rather than just solving it. It will work on the internal and external factors causing the pain rather than just prescribing medicines as in the conventional way of treatment. Furthermore, it will work on your emotional and mental state to bring about positive changes in your life.

What is Holistic Health?

Holistic health signifies the wellbeing of your entire body. A person who is sick and unwell goes through a lot of changes both physical and mental. Modern medicine focuses only on identifying the physical symptoms of the disease and treating them either by suppressing or eliminating the symptoms. But is the person healed?

Here comes the role of holistic healing. Holistic treatment tries to understand not only the root cause of the disease but how it has impacted the person emotionally and spiritually. For long-term diseases, holistic healing can be the best treatment. Holistic health is influenced by many factors such as:

Stress and anxiety.
Sexual health.
– Toxins in your body.
– Climate and environmental factors.
– Exercise and rest.

These factors are responsible for understanding the reaction and relationship of a person to his external environment. Holistic treatment believes that each person is intertwined with these basic factors.
The fundamental of holistic treatment is to integrate with functional medicine and together they can bring about a sense of harmony and balance to achieve optimal health.
Holistic health makes you aware of these factors and that you are responsible for your wellbeing. Participants should actively take part in their day-to-day health regime. Practicing holistic health empowers individuals in which they are responsible for their health.

Holistic Healing: A Brief History

The history of holistic healing is 5000 years old and dates back to ancient China and Ayurveda.

Ancient healers believed that:

  • Nature played an important role in a person’s physical wellbeing.
  • They believed in the wellbeing of a person’s entire body.
  • Self-empowerment or realization of one’s wellbeing.

According to the great Greek philosopher Socrates, healing refers to the wellness of the entire body and not just a body part.

Ancient holistic healing was mainly of four types:

  • Ayurveda. The history of Ayurveda could be traced back to the 6th century B.C. and was based on the texts written by Sushruta popularly known as the “father of Ayurveda”. According to his philosophy, Ayurveda was based on the 5 principle elements of the universe, 7 fundamental elements of the body, and 3 doshas or bodily energies.

Ayurveda is very similar to ancient Chinese medicine and believed in the interconnectivity of these elements and how a proper balance could achieve wellness in the body.

  • Ancient Chinese Medicine. Ancient Chinese medicine is 5000 years old and believes that our body is a universe. All the external and internal energies are playing an integral part in maintaining a proper balance in the body. They believe in ‘qi’ which is the life force and ‘shen’ or spirit are the two energies that work in harmony to maintain health.
  • Herbal Medicine. Herbs are known for their medicinal properties and are being used for ages by different cultures worldwide. The art of using herbs for healing purposes is known as herbalism and plays a key role both in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine.

What is the role of a holistic healer?

A holistic healer besides being a practitioner should be able to understand your emotional needs and state of mind.A good holistic healer can identify and understand the discomforts you are going through and how it has affected your physical wellbeing.

For example, if you are suffering from stomach problems due to anxiety, medicines will only give temporary relief to your symptoms. A holistic healer, on the other hand, will try to understand the root cause of the disease. He will try to make certain lifestyle changes or perhaps prescribe meditation which can relax your body and mind.

Holistic healers believe in teamwork. They like to work hand-in-hand with other professionals and use their expertise to bring about positive changes in your life.
