What are Botox injections?
Botox injections are shots administered by a certified cosmetic surgeon to minimize facial wrinkles and improve your facial appearance.
Botox injections stop the contraction of muscle cells. They do so by hindering the release of the neurotransmitter substance acetylcholine.
Once injected into the facial muscles, Botox hinders nerve signals to muscles. That means injected muscles tense up.
The effects last between 3 to 12 months. Botox injections are mostly administered in these areas:
- Wrinkles around eyes
- Frown lines – These are the wrinkles that form between your eyebrows
- Horizontal creases – These form in your forehead
Some people form lines at the corners of their mouths and may consider Botox injection to remove them.
Why do you need a Botox injection?
Botox shots are primarily used to correct facial wrinkles and frown lines by relaxing your facial muscles.
They are also useful in managing symptoms caused by certain health conditions. Botox shots are not in themselves a cure for any health conditions.
Some of the medical conditions that have been successfully treated using Botox shots include:
Muscle spasms
Botox injection can help to manage muscle spasms caused by movement disorders. Some people also experience eye twitching due to muscle spasms.
Sweating
Botox shots have been shown to treat hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating. Such excessive sweating happens even when a person is not working out.
Neck spasms
This is a painful condition that is characterized by uncontrolled contraction of the neck muscles.
Neck spasms are also referred to as cervical dystonia and it leads to uncomfortable twists and turns of the head.
Bladder problems
People with an overactive bladder may experience urinary incontinence. This can be minimized using Botox injection.
Lazy eye
In case the muscles responsible for eye movement lack balance, this could lead to a condition known as lazy eye or crossed eye. Botox injections help to correct the lazy eye.
Migraine
If you have chronic headaches or a migraine, your doctor can prescribe Botox shots to correct this problem. These are people who have serious headaches about 15 times or more every 30 days.
To fully realize the benefit of Botox shots, you would need to receive a shot every 90 days.
If you have the following conditions, it would not be a good idea to get Botox injections:
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
- In case your facial muscles are weak
- If you have neuromuscular diseases
- If you have drooping eyelids
Preparing for a Botox procedure
Before Botox treatment, you will have an appointment with your cosmetic surgeon. During this meeting, you the cosmetic surgeon will conduct a thorough physical examination to determine that you are fit enough for the procedure.
During the medical examination, your cosmetic surgeon will be interested in knowing whether you are allergic to botulinum toxin, the primary ingredient in Botox shots.
If you are allergic to this ingredient, your cosmetic surgeon will advise you against this treatment as it could lead to life-threatening complications.
Your cosmetic surgeon will discuss the right botulinum injections for you, based on your condition and needs.
If you have received any Botox shots in the last four months, let your doctor know of this.
You will need to let your cosmetic surgeon know about any medications or supplements that you are taking.
You will be asked to stop taking some medications like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and blood thinners a few weeks before and after Botox treatment.
Such medication elevates the risk of bruising at the site of injection. If you are a smoker, you will be asked to stop the habit because smoking affects the effectiveness of a Botox treatment. It will also delay your healing.
Alcohol intake is at least 24 hours before Botox treatment. This is because alcohol increases the risk of burning or redness.
Procedure
Botox treatment is usually carried out in your doctor’s office.
Botox treatment is not a very painful procedure and can be administered without anesthesia.
In case you are getting Botox shots to treat your heavy sweating on the feet or palms of your hands, you may desire prior numbing of the skin.
Your cosmetic surgeon may elect for vibration anesthesia which entails applying ice on the skin and massaging it.
In case of Botox treatments to correct an overactive bladder, your anesthetist will administer regional or local anesthesia beforehand.
Your cosmetic surgeon injects a small amount of botulinum toxin into your muscle or skin using a thin needle.
Some people end up receiving more shots than others because the area being treated is bigger.
Your healthcare provider may decide to use ultrasound to make sure the thin needles get to the right spots.
You will experience mild discomfort after the Botox treatment. Your cosmetic surgeon can decide to apply a numbing agent before the procedure to minimize the discomfort.
There are two types of botulinum toxins in use for Botox treatment:
Type A botulinum toxin entails Botox, Xeaomin, Dysport, and Jeaveau. It is primarily used to correct facial wrinkles.
Type B botulinum toxin includes Myobloc and is primarily used to treat neck spasms.
After botox treatment
You should start seeing the results after a few days of Botox injection. However, some people may take over 7 days before full results are evident.
Avoid massaging or rubbing the treated area for the next 24 hours after the procedure.
Avoid lying down for about 2-4 hours after the procedure. This prevents the toxin from traveling to unwanted areas.
Most people can resume their normal activities after a day or two of receiving Botox injections. It is important to check with your cosmetic surgeon before resuming your daily chores.
The effects of Botox treatment do not last over four months. That means you will probably receive retreatment from time to time.
With time, your muscles contrast less. Therefore, your cosmetic surgeon may space future treatments over an extended duration of time.
Talk to your cosmetic surgeon to find out your expected frequency of Botox treatment to meet your unique needs.
