What is CLA safflower oil?

Conjugated linoleic acid also referred to as CLA is a type of polyunsaturated fatty acid that has acquired a place in the weight reduction sector. Safflower oil is a constituent of the following elements, monounsaturated fatty acid (oleic acid omega-9) 13-75%, polyunsaturated fatty acid (linoleic acid omega-6) 14-79%, and saturated fatty acid (palmitic acid) 4-10%.

How are CLA and safflower oil related?

Both CLA and safflower retain their own credibility of several copious qualities. Whereas CLA safflower oil is a blended mixture which contains safflower as the principal ingredient and varied extracts from numerous plants. The combination of safflower, CLA and other plant extracts provides a detoxifying effect combine with the reduction of several fatal health complications.  This magic supplement helps to reduce body weight and also contributes to muscle growth. The combined production of CLA and safflower oil came to the spotlight in the year 1979 and was labeled as CLA safflower oil.

It came to the limelight with several speculations but was however deemed safe for consumption by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2008. To clarify their explanation, they elaborated further that CLA is an inherent component that is produced in the body when bacteria acts on meat products and dairy products in the intestine or stomach.  The bacterium in your body performs the duty of extracting and synthesizing the Linoleic Acid that helps in removing excess fat from your body.

Dr. Mark Cook from the University of Wisconsin took issue with the results by pointing out that in his own similar experiments, “A vegetable oil like safflower is used as the negative control! Replacing only 5-10% of vegetable oil consumption with CLA improves fat accumulation and inflammation substantially.”

These empirical studies have proven that the combination of CLA and safflower do help with weight reduction. The CLA safflower oil targets the abdominal fat and specified areas of the body. It also aids in boosting metabolism, breaking down of existing fat tissues and stops new ones from occurring, adding to which it retains the muscle mass and influences muscle growth. It is not an over-the-counter medication that has to be obtained with the help of prescriptions but it a so-called medication that helps to keep your weight in check. Apart from weight loss and muscle mass it also helps strengthen immunity.

However, its ingredients have been a mystery and an array of studies and researches brought its ingredients to the light, thanks to science. Below are the individual benefits of the ingredients present in the making of CLA safflower oil, they are,

  • Safflower the major plant ingredient- a friend to weight loss treatment.
  • Linoleic Acid is an element extracted from Safflower and synthesized to form CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid).

  • Black nut hull is an effective remedy for parasitic infections; it also finds its place in the list of ingredients.
  • Prune extract that consists of sorbitol acts as a natural laxative and helps prevent constipation. The high amount of fiber in it is a plus point and the aloe vera gives you radiant and glowing skin.
  • Apple Pectin is also a cholesterol controller and constipation preventer.
  • Acidophilus probiotic, this is present in almost all probiotic blends, these exist in the human body naturally.
  • A certain amount of plant extracts.

How true are its claims?

The very introduction of the CLA safflower oil into society came out with several speculations ruling its adverse effects. A study in 2007 by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition discovered that CLA supplements influenced an increase in fat oxidation and burned energy during sleep. Another study in 2007 by the International Journal of Obesity stated that it could help reduce body fat and shave off holiday weight gain.

Though it sounds promising, it has been a controversial product for several years. It is under speculation that CLA in safflower oil is a type of Trans fat which can be chemically made by altering linoleic acid which is prominent in vegetable oils. The effects of CLA in safflower oil get altered when they are made for commercial purposes which make it difficult to obtain the authentic benefits present in the original CLA.

Many individuals are under the consumption that safflower is a wonderful source of CLA. But on the contrary, it contains only .7 milligram of CLA per gram of safflower oil. Safflower oil is made up of linoleic oil which accounts for 70%. The presence of omega-6 fats in CLA safflower oil has been another section of concern as omega-6 fatty acids are major contributors to obesity. Such formulated claims are yet to be proven and its authenticity is yet to be determined.

Are there any side-effects?

It may not show a lot of side effects but when taken beyond the recommended daily allowance (RDA) it can cause harmful effects. CLA safflower oil showcases a thinning effect in blood. It may slow down the clotting of blood which can lead to bleeding.

It is therefore contradicted for people with bleeding disorders, and those who have undergone surgery. It shouldn’t be combined with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs, for instance medication like aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), diclofenac (Voltaren, Cataflam, others), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), naproxen (Anaprox, Naprosyn, others), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, warfarin (Coumadin), and others. People with an allergy to ragweed and similar plants should consult with their doctor or dietician before taking a safflower diet.

Is CLA safflower the right oil for you?

Irrespective of its encouraging benefits and a promise to give you those curves, it is still necessary for you to maintain a healthy lifestyle by following a plant-based diet loaded with vegetables, fruits, and other nutrients. As Nutritionist Taub-Dix says, “There is only one way to achieve health and vitality and that is through a healthy eating and exercise plan”. There aren’t any much damages reported after the consumption of CLA safflower oil and has been found prominently in many individuals diet plan.

In sum, whether it is any part of the world where CLA safflower oil is sold for commercial purposes, it is always better to choose traditional fat burners like ghee which with the implementation of CLA safflower oil has lost its market.
