What is the average penis size and why should you care?

What is considered to be a normal penis size?

There has been a long debate among the young generation as to what is considered to be a normal size of the penis.  It has always been a wrong message which the youngsters receive when they come across any movie or advertisements depicting the size of the penis.  Many young males have come to the conclusion that the penis size should be matching the model they have viewed in the movie or the advertisement.  In fact, many individuals even make up their mind to go under the knife not knowing the risk factors associated with it.

Scientifically speaking, the average size of the penis depends on numerous factors such as genes, environmental circumstances, as well as endocrine interrupters.  Here, the size of the penis refers to the erect penis and not the flaccid state.  Again, the size of an erect penis may vary depending on several factors such as temperature in the room, time at which it is aroused, number of sexual encounters, as well as how well it has been aroused.

Facts on penis size

  • A random study has estimated that around 45% of men are not happy about their penis size.
  • Surprisingly 85% of women are satisfied with their partner’s penis size.
  • Did you know that the average length of the flaccid penis is only 7 to 10 cm?
  • According to medical standards, an erect penis measuring anywhere between 5 inches and above is considered normal.
  • Did you know that the girth of the human penis is thicker than the penis of a fully grown gorilla?

How is the size of the penis determined?

Flaccid

It should be noted that the size of the flaccid penis does not determine the actual size of the penis.  According to the medical standards, a flaccid penis would measure around 7 to 10 cm.  A smaller flaccid penis does not mean that the size of the erect penis would be smaller and similarly a larger flaccid penis again would not determine the size of an erect penis.  The penis would generally remain in the flaccid state majority of the time.  Other than this, cold temperature and nervousness would keep the penis in the flaccid state where the scrotum, as well as the penis, would contract inwards making the penis look much smaller than the actual size.  The contraction of the penis and scrotum inwards is generally faced by a cyclist.  This phenomenon occurs when pressure is exerted on the perineum for a prolonged period of time.

Stretched

A method of stretching the penis to measure it has been followed in certain cases.  It has been reported that the length of the penis remains the same when it is stretched or when it is in an erect position.  This method of measuring the size of the penis is questionable since there have been numerous cases where the size of the penis would differ when it is erect as compared to when it is stretched.  However, a study conducted in 2015 demonstrated that the size of a stretched penis more or less correlates with the size of the erect penis.  The reported size of a stretched penis in a flaccid state is around 5.2 inches whereas with the size of an erect penis is 5.17 inches.

Erect

nitric oxide erectile dysfunctionThe size of an erect penis is considered the actual size and this ranges around 5 inches.  Medically speaking an erect penis measuring around 5 inches and above is considered to be normal.  This report is generated considering the entries obtained in the form of self-measurement as well as medical tests conducted by a medical professional.  There are also cases reported of an erect penis measuring below 3 inches.  This is medically called a micropenis, which may occur due to a deformity.

How do I measure my penis size ?

Penis length

Length of an erect penis can be achieved with the use of a ruler.  The ruler should be positioned at the base of the penis where it connects to the body.  Try to touch the pubic bone which is considered the base of the penis.  Touching the pubic bone is advised since many individuals may have higher belly fat and this may lead to submersion of the penis inwards.

Once the base of the penis is determined, now measure till the tip of the penis.  Beware that these maneuvers may reduce the length of the erect penis marginally as your arousal state may deplete.  As discussed earlier, an erect penis measuring anywhere around 5 inches and above is considered to be normal.  In certain cases, an erect penis may be curved.  In such cases using a flexible ruler is advised to determine the accurate length.

Penis girth

Girth or the thickness of the penis can be determined with the use of a flexible ruler or a tape.  Using a soft string would be ideal.  Now roll the string or tape around the erect penis where you consider it to be the thickest.  This would give you the girth of your penis which is generally around 4.5 inches.

Penis width

Penis width can be determined in the same way as the girth of the penis.  Use a tape of smooth string to wrap around the penis and measure the girth.  The width can be determined by dividing the girth by 3.14.  For example, if the girth of the penis is 4.5 inches then the width of the penis is 4.5 divided by 3.14.

Micropenis, a detailed overview

This is a medical condition where the size of an erect penis is smaller than 3 inches long.  Many factors may contribute to the size of the penis although genetic abnormalities and hormonal abnormalities are considered to be the main cause o micropenis.  As a matter of fact, there seems to be no actual cure for micropenis other than some hormone therapy.  This condition is extremely rare which accounts to only 0.6% of men affected by this condition.

Symptoms

Since this condition is related to hormonal imbalance, there is a high possibility that this condition would generally be associated with an underlying health condition.  A condition of low testosterone level may arise, which when left unchecked can lead to erectile dysfunction and later lower sperm count.  In fact, the majority of the symptoms are determined by the way micropenis is caused.

Causes

One of the leading causes of micropenis is related to testosterone deficiency during pregnancy.  This condition is medically referred to as fetal testosterone deficiency.

A medical condition called hypogonadotropic hypogonadism causes deficiency in testosterone levels.  It is believed that malfunction of the pituitary gland to secrete hormones leads to this medical condition.  Similarly, genetics plays an important role in determining if a person would be affected by micropenis or not.  If your father or grandfather has suffered this condition, it is more than likely that you may be affected by this problem.

The bottom line is that micropenis is generally caused due to problems during pregnancy.  Low secretion of human chorionic gonadotropin hormone during the early stages of pregnancy is the root cause of hormonal imbalance leading to micropenis.  In fact, it can be associated with any chromosomal disorders such as Down syndrome, Turner syndrome, as well as Klinefelter syndrome.  Another lesser-known cause may include the use of fertility drugs as well as exposure to pesticides containing chlorine.

Diagnosis

Early diagnosis of micropenis can be determined during the process of circumcision.  Since circumcision is done within five days of birth, the doctor can determine the length of the penis during the physical examination.

It is advised to check the penis length when the penis is stretched as opposed to a flaccid state.  If a micropenis is determined by checking the length of the penis, appropriate treatment can be rendered early in the life to correct the abnormality.  Doctors can also concentrate on pituitary gland malfunction in case a micropenis is determined.  This gives a better chance of treating this condition appropriately.

Treatment for micropenis

Micropenis treatment largely varies among infants and adults. Testosterone therapy is the most likely treatment that would be rendered for children with micropenis.  In the case of adults, there are several other modes of treatment.  The following are the treatments rendered for adults and children with micropenis.

Testosterone Therapy

IM injections of testosterone can be administered to children affected by this condition.  A series of testosterone shots split across four consecutive weeks can be administered to promote penis growth.  Infants with micropenis are delayed with circumcision in order to benefit from testosterone therapy.  There is a high rate of positive results when testosterone therapy is rendered to children below three years.  There is limited or no benefit when testosterone therapy is administered to adults with micropenis.

Gender reassignment procedure

This type of procedure was in use in the early days but is usually not followed in the modern era.  Here, a young boy having a micropenis would be operated upon to change the gender without the consent of the child.  This would generally be followed by consuming hormones in the future to completely change the boy to a girl.  Consumption of hormone therapy would involve lifelong use in order to maintain the changes.  This can be psychologically stressful and hence is not followed in the modern era.

Penis reconstruction surgery

Adults with micropenis may choose to undergo a penis reconstruction surgery such as penis length surgery, penis girth surgery, or liposuction.  A penis reconstruction surgery is considered to be highly risky and hence is generally avoided.  As a matter of fact, penis enlargement surgery can increase the length of the penis by only 2 cm.  Moreover, there is a higher risk of damaging the nerves, leading to erectile dysfunction, as well as unsatisfactory erections.

Similarly, silicone implants surgery may be undertaken to increase the length and thickness of the penis.  This again is considered to be highly risky and is not medically approved.  Majority of these cases end up with complications and hence there is a very low success rate.

Bottom line

As discussed earlier, there has been a misconception about the size of the penis.  Movies and advertisements related to penis size seem to be misleading the youngsters.  The hype created by the advertisements about increasing the penis size is nothing but making a fool out of you.  At the end of the day, it is you who is going to be affected not only medically but also psychologically.  Educating yourself with the facts could provide a better insight into the average size of the penis.

Dos

  • Check for the penis size during infancy.
  • Seek immediate medical treatment if found to have a micropenis.
  • Consult your doctor about the penis size before coming to conclusions.
  • Avoid penis enlargement surgery.

Don’ts

  • Ignore penis size during infancy.
  • Delay medical treatment.
  • May conclusions without professional support.
  • Undergo a penis enlargement surgery.
