Female Masturbation: Tips on how to turn up the heat during a solo mission

Last Updated December 24th, 2019

What is masturbation?

Masturbation is the term given to the self-stimulation of the sexual organs to achieve orgasm. Orgasm is defined as the state a person where he/she reaches the peak of his/her sexual excitement. It is accompanied by feelings of immense physical pleasure and sensations. The body releases certain hormones and chemicals during an orgasm that results in rhythmic muscular contractions.

Men usually masturbate by either stroking the penis with the hand or with the help of a sex toy until the climax is achieved and ejaculation occurs. Men can also climax by the stimulation of the prostate.

Women, meanwhile, usually masturbate by stroking or massaging their clitoris (the female equivalent of the penis, in terms of sexual pleasure) or by stimulating their G-spot (a sensitive area in the vagina) with the help of toys or their fingers. Here is a little more detail about the two types of female masturbation.

Clitoral

This is the most common and widely used masturbation technique by women. Most women use their fingers to massage and stimulate their clitoris. However, sex toys such as a vibrator can also be used to stimulate the clitoris. Most women experience a tingling sensation when they achieve an orgasm via the clitoris.

Vaginal

In this type of masturbation, women use a sex toy (like a dildo) to penetrate themselves. Vaginal masturbation is similar to intercourse as it involves penetration. The climax may be more intense compared to a clitoris orgasm especially if you manage to hit the G-spot.

Some women experience multiple orgasms, which means they can climax more than once during a period of sexual activity.

There are many sex toys that can be used for a pleasurable masturbation experience.

Facts on female masturbation

  • According to stats, women in their late 20s tend to masturbate the most
  • Women masturbate less compared to men
  • According to a global survey, 20% of women have never masturbated in their lives
  • 4 out of 10 women prefer orgasm from masturbation over actual sex.
  • The average female orgasm lasts for around 10 seconds
  • The longest female orgasm is said to have lasted for  43 seconds
  • Women with higher levels of testosterone are likely to masturbate more
  • Vibrators are the preferred sex toys used by women during masturbation
  • Most women prefer clitoral stimulation over vaginal stimulation
  • While masturbating, a woman’s perception of who is sexually attractive changes

Getting Started

People generally don’t give it a lot of thought while masturbating. However, if you want to get some extra satisfaction, you can follow the steps below:

Find the right setting

The right setting can make a lot of difference in setting the right mood. You can start by dimming the lights or putting on some scented candles. You can also play some smooth jazz or whichever music that puts you in the mood.

Caress yourself

You can start by stroking your erogenous zones in the body such as the inner thighs, neck, and ears. After that, you can move on the breasts and nipples before going down.

Use your imagination

The brain is considered to be the most important sexual organ. So use it. Everyone has their own sexual fantasies. Some women like BDSM, others fantasize about being in an orgy. Close your eyes and think about the situations that make your spine tingle. You can also fantasize about a celebrity or a crush.

Watch pornography/read erotic stories

If you are not blessed with the best of imaginations then you can dig into some porn or read some erotica. Doing this can get you hot and in the mood very fast.

Don’t rush into it

Masturbation should be considered as a marathon and not a sprint. So when you are planning a solo session, make sure that you have plenty of time and no one disturbs you. Take time to feel all the sensations in your body when you start masturbating. This can make the climax even more pleasurable.

Doing the actual deed

Women can masturbate and achieve climax in several different ways. Here are the most common ways to masturbate

Clitoral stimulation

This is the most common way of masturbating in women. If you are interested in exploring this technique, read below

  • After getting yourself adequately aroused by using the aforementioned techniques start by stroking the fleshy area on the top of the vagina.
  • After that, you can start rubbing or massaging the clitoris through its outer covering (clitoral hood). You can do this by making either circular or diagonal motions around the clitoris. You can also lightly tap the clitoris.
  • After it gets wet, you can then start moving your fingers faster and faster, while also increasing the pressure. Keep on doing this until you climax. If you want to experience multiple orgasms you should consider using a vibrator as your fingers will start to tire.

Vaginal stimulation

Most women don’t practice this technique due to many misconceptions and superstitions. Some believe that they will not be able to climax through this technique. Others are afraid that they will lose their virginity without having sex.

In truth, penetrating your vagina with a sex toy or your fingers can’t result in your having immense pleasure even if you don’t climax. If you haven’t tried this technique then read below

  • After getting yourself aroused, you can start by massaging the opening of your vagina. After you have become sufficiently wet or applied enough lubrication, slowly start inserting your toy or fingers inside the vagina.
  • To successfully accomplish insertion, be relaxed, take time and do it gently. If your hymen (a thin tissue covering the opening of the vagina) is still intact, you can slowly stretch it until it breaks (sometimes there may be some blood when the hymen snaps). If your hymen is already broken, penetration will be easier.
  • You can then start moving your fingers or toy in and out in different motions. Using a combination of motions can help you stimulate the G-spot, which will result in more pleasure.
  • Gradually increase the speed and the pressure as the climax begins to build. You may get an orgasm or you may not. Don’t worry if you don’t get an orgasm as it common for a woman to not orgasm during penetration.

Anal stimulation

This is a less common form of female masturbation. However, you may get an explosive orgasm by using this technique. This is because, during anal stimulation, the G-spot gets indirectly stimulated through the walls of the rectum. Furthermore, the anus is very sensitive due to it having a lot of nerve endings.

  • If you want to try this technique, you can follow the steps mentioned below:
  • You should first clean out your rectum. This can be done by using a rectal douche or a water enema.
  • Start by applying lube on the rectum and your toy or finger (be sure to do this as the anus does not self lubricate.
  • After that, start massaging the outside of your anus before slowly inserting your hand or the toy. Do it very slowly and don’t try to force the toy or your hand in if it does not go in easily.
  • After you have fully inserted your hand or the toy into the anus, start increasing the rhythm until you climax.

Vaginal and clitoral stimulation

Most women experience intense orgasms when they stimulate the clitoris and vagina simultaneously.  If you want to try this technique read below

  • After you get aroused, use a combination of your fingers and sex toys to stimulate the vagina and the clitoris. The easiest way to do this would be to use a vibrator on your clitoris while penetrating your vagina with your hand or a dildo at the same time.
  • You can use different or the same motions when stimulation the vagina and clitoris.
  • Gradually increase the intensity of the motions and the pressure until you are ready to explode.

A brief history of female masturbation

The oldest sex toy ever found was a 3,000-year-old dildo in Germany. It is believed that Cleopatra of Egypt used to hollow a gourd and fill them with bees and use it as a vibrator. It is also said that she used snakes as sex toys.

Ancient Greece believed that both men and women were supposed to ejaculate in order for a baby to be born. As a result, they encouraged women to finger themselves and climax. Meanwhile, in the Middle East, men and women used to masturbate together in order to please the fertility gods and ensure a good harvest.

In the Victorian era in England, masturbation was taboo as it was declared sinful by the church. However, it was common for doctors to give women pelvic massages to cure hysteria. In 1869, Dr. George Taylor invented the steam-powered vibrator to help doctors cure women of hysteria. However, vibrators were made available to the public after the electric vibrator was invented in 1902.

In the mid 20th century, doctors and scientists began researching on female orgasms. They finally proved that women were capable of having multiple orgasms from either vaginal or clitoral stimulation. Today, the many health benefits of masturbation have been scientifically proven.

Benefits of masturbating

Masturbation is a common and perfectly healthy way to relieve sexual tension. Apart from being fun, it also has a lot of health benefits. These are:

  • It improves a woman’s sex life
  • It improves mental health
  • It can ease menstrual cramps
  • Masturbation helps relieve emotional stress
  • It can reduce depression
  • In post-menopausal women, masturbation helps increases blood flow to the sex organs. This can prevent the narrowing of the vagina.
  • Masturbation can cut the risk of cervical infections and type-2 diabetes in women

Side effects of masturbation

Despite there being many myths stating the harmful effects of masturbation, there are actually none. However, excessive masturbation can harm your day to day life and relationships. Some other potentially harmful effects of masturbation are:

  • Excessive masturbation may lead to acne
  • You may get addicted to it
  • You may physically injure yourself

Important dos and don’ts to remember

Dos

  • Always sterilize your sex toys before using them
  • Always try to use as much lubrication as possible especially during anal stimulation
  • Make sure you pee before you start masturbating

Don’ts

  • Overdo it. It is common knowledge that everything in excess is bad. So don’t masturbate too much.
  • Do it too fast and hard as you may end up injuring privates
  • Think that masturbation is wrong or a dirty act.
